What I Chose to Let Go Of to Create a More Peaceful Home

Updated: Aug 20

Because peace isn't only created by what we bring in—it also grows through what we gently let go of.

For a long time, I thought creating a peaceful home meant adding more.

A prettier candle.

A softer blanket.

Another plant.

Another basket to organize everything.

And while I still love beautiful things, I've realized that peace doesn't always arrive through what we bring into our homes.

Sometimes it arrives through what we're willing to release.

Over the years, my home has slowly become quieter—not because it's perfect, but because I've become more intentional about what I choose to live with.

These are a few of the things I no longer keep in my home.

1. Things I keep "just in case"

There was a time when letting go felt almost impossible.

I grew up believing I should hold on to everything.

What if I need it one day?

What if I can't afford to replace it?

What if I regret giving it away?

Looking back, I realize I wasn't just holding on to things.

I was holding on to a feeling of scarcity.

Somewhere inside me, I believed that having more meant I would be safer.

But over the years, something shifted.

I discovered that abundance isn't measured by how much we keep.

Sometimes it begins the moment we trust ourselves enough to let something go.

These days, if something no longer serves a purpose or brings me joy, I thank it and let it go.

The empty space often feels more valuable than the thing itself.

2. Clothes that make me feel bad about myself

You know the ones.

The jeans that almost fit.

The dress that reminds you of who you used to be.

The sweater you keep because you spent too much money on it.

I've learned that opening my closet should never feel like walking into a room full of criticism.

I want my clothes to support the woman I am today—not remind me of someone I'm trying to become.

3. Broken things waiting to be fixed

A loose drawer.

A chipped mug.

A lamp that only works if you wiggle the cord.

Individually they seem insignificant.

Together they quietly whisper,

"Something isn't quite right."

Whenever I can, I either repair them or let them go.

The small sense of completion brings more peace than I ever expect.

4. Constant background noise

There was a time when the television was almost always on.

Not because I was watching.

Just because I didn't want silence.

Now I've discovered something unexpected.

Silence isn't empty.

It's where I notice the birds outside.

The kettle beginning to sing.

The wind moving through the trees.

My own thoughts slowing down.

Sometimes the most peaceful sound in a home is no sound at all.

5. Guilt

This one doesn't sit on a shelf.

But it lives in our homes just the same.

The gift we keep because we feel bad giving it away.

The project we know we'll never finish.

The hobby we've quietly outgrown.

Every object carries a little energy.

Every unfinished project quietly asks for our attention.

Every item we keep out of guilt tells a story each time we walk past it.

I've learned that letting go isn't ungrateful.

Sometimes it's simply making room for the life we're actually living.

6. The idea that my home has to impress anyone

This might be the biggest change of all.

I no longer decorate for guests.

Or trends.

Or social media.

I decorate for the person who wakes up here every morning.

The woman who enjoys her coffee by the window.

Who lights a candle in the evening.

Who picks flowers from the garden simply because they make her smile.

Who wants to walk through the front door and immediately feel herself exhale.

If my home helps me breathe a little deeper when I walk through the door...

then it has already done everything I need it to do.

Coming Home

I've realized that a peaceful home isn't built all at once.

It's created through hundreds of small choices.

The things we bring in.

The things we let go of.

The habits we repeat.

The moments we notice.

Little by little, our homes begin to feel lighter.

And perhaps, without even realizing it...

we do too.

What's one thing you've let go of that made your home—or your life—feel a little more peaceful? I'd love to hear in the comments.
